sorrento restaurants

Sorrento probably has the best variety of restaurants in and around the Amalfi region. From modest but delicious pizza places to Michelin star restaurants

Sorrento Restaurants

If you’re looking for the best restaurants in Sorrento during your stay in Italy then we have got you covered although please bear in mind that establishing what are the top restaurants in Sorrento can be a very subjective thing. One person’s experience can differ greatly from another’s.

We’ve put together a list of restaurants that we feel are worth visiting. Some of them might be family run trattorias serving classic Italian dishes we all know and love whilst some of our other recommendations might be Michelin star restaurants offering a tasting menu to bedazzle your taste buds.

Many of the restaurants serve locally sourced foods whether that be tomatoes, sea food or even lemons. Some of our recommended restaurants offer jaw dropping views whilst some of our other top restaurants rely purely on the food and ambience to wow your taste buds.

Take a look below at our guide and we’re sure you will not be disappointed whichever restaurants you choose to dine in.

Terraza Bosquet (Excelsior Vittoria)

If you want to experience one of the best restaurants in Sorrento then we think you will be hard pressed to find a better overall experience than the Terrazza Bosquet.

Part of the classic and elegant “Grand Dame” of Sorrento hotels, the Excelsior Vittoria, the Terrazza Bosquet restaurant will blow you away even before you sit down to eat.

The entrance is straight from the Piazza Tasso and through the entrance to the gardens of the Excelsior Vittoria hotel. As you start walking through the garden you already begin to feel that you are about to experience something special. The expanse of the gardens makes you feel like you have stepped into another world, away from the hustle and bustle of Piazza Tasso.

As you approach the hotel you are then directed to the restaurant. In fine weather you will be escorted to the outdoor terrace. At this point the view will astound you as you realise the restuarant terrace is above the marina, overlooking the sea with Vesuvius as a backdrop.

It is around this point that you will notice how attentive, polite and helpful the staff are. They explain everything to you and they clearly have a passion for the food that they serve from the wine to the bread!

The Terraza Bosquet restaurant is one of the few restaurants in the entire region (including Naples) which has earnt a Michelin star so you can be pretty confident that the food is going to be something special and very confident that the meal isn’t going to be cheap but…..here, you are not just eating a meal, you are taking part in a theatrical experience. The way the food is served and presented, the attentiveness of the staff, the views ALL combine to create a memory that will stay with you a lifetime. So yes, it is pricier than getting a pizza a few hundred metres down the road but if you really want a memorable experience in one of the best restaurants in this part of Italy then the Terraza Bosquet is a no brainer.

Don Geppi

Shopping in Sorrento

Located in the quieter town of Sant Agnello, Don Geppi doesn’t receive the hype that many other restaurants in Sorrento regularly gets. Even tourists staying in Sant Agnello are often unaware of it’s existence and even the exterior is very unassuming. If you didn’t know it was there then there’s a good chance you would walk right past it.

The Don Geppi restaurant is located within the Majestic Palace hotel on a quiet street in Sant Agnello and we believe this is one of the best restaurants you can visit whilst staying in Sorrento OR the Amalfi coast.

The Don Geppi also boasts a Michelin star rating but isn’t as lucky as the Terraza Bosquet with its sea views, however, the Don Geppi makes up for this with a much more intimate and intense dining experience that really does elevate it to a completely different level.

During the warm sunny months the windows to the Don Geppi are thrown open and diners are given a glimpse of one of the finest gardens in this region, complete with a vegetable garden from which the kitchen sources many of it’s ingredients from.

The restaurant itself only has five tables which enables the staff to provide a much more personal experience to diners. In fact, Don Geppi is believed to be the smallest Michelin star restaurant in Italy. Whilst some restaurants lean more on the view than the food, there can be no doubt that the Don Geppi gives food the centre stage.

Bagni Delfino

bagni-delfino-restaurant-sorrento

Located in one of the most charming parts of Sorrento, at Marina Grande, the Bagni Delfino restaurant has carved a reputation as arguably the most scenic place to eat in town. Not only do you get to enjoy sea views and Mount Vesuvius but the restaurant literally extends over and hovers over the sea, courtesy of a purpose built pier so whilst you’re tucking into your food you can hear the waves lapping around your feet.

The Bagni Delfino provides excellent food with a particular emphasis on fresh seafood, some of which probably came from the same marina where the restaurant is located. Prices are reasonable though definitely not the cheapest in Sorrento. Expect to pay around € 34 for a sea food main dish, for example salmon or sea bass. They also have an extensive wine list.

The restaurant’s location at Marina Grande probably necessitates a taxi drive for many diners unless you’re fit enough to make your way down to the marina. It is worth the effort though and it’s easy to see why the Delfino Bagni is one of the top restaurants in Sorrento.

O’Parrucchiano La Favorita

parruchiano-restaurant-sorrento

Situated right on the Corso Italia, the Parrucchiano La Favorita restaurant is possibly the most well known restaurant in Sorrento.

If there’s one restaurant in Sorrento which you are most likely to have seen on your Facebook feed, Tiktok scroll or Instagram then it’s likely to be the O Parruchiano Favorita. It is renowned for it’s stunning citrus grove with dining tables located under the lemon trees. The restaruant really makes an effort to make the place look as photogenic as possible and in our opinion they have succeeded. Please be aware though that the entire restaurant is not located in the citrus grove and when busy then you may be seated at another place within the restaurant.

Seafood and pasta are popular dishes on the menu and the food is consistently good with prices very reasonable. Main courses are around the  € 22 mark with desserts around € 8. If you can get a table under the lemon laden trees then this Sorrento favourite possibly offers the best bang for your buck.

Il Buco

il-buco-restaurant-sorrento

We have included Il Buco in our guide to Sorrento restaurants as it is yet another Michelin star venue in town and this really should not be taken for granted as Michelin stars are not given out lightly.

Il Buco is centrally located within easy walking distance from Sorrento’s Piazza Tasso.

Part of the restaurant is sited within the vaulted ceilings of an old 16th century monastery whilst another section of the restaurant is more contemporary in design.

As with most Michelin star restaurants there is a tasting menu on offer which presents the best and most innovative dishes the master chef has created. Prices for the tasting menu are around € 140 which is what you’d come to expect for this type of menu within a Michelin star restaurant.

If you prefer not to try the tasting menu then you will find prices for other meals much more reasonable with prices for meat and fish dishes around € 35.

Now, some reviews for Il Buco have been less than complimentary, notably about the customer service. We cannot comment on this and most establishments will sometimes deliver a service that may not be to our liking. It is very subjective. All we can say is that the food has been very highly rated by the people at Michelin and if you’re looking for a fine dining experience then Il Buco has to be included within that list of places to try out.

Il Ruttino

Il Ruttino is a departure from some of the pricier restaurants in Sorrento. The restaurant is located in the nearby town of Sant Agnello, about a 20-25 minute walk from Piazza Tasso.

There’s normally someone sat outside the restaurant chatting and engaging with pedestrians in a very friendly, non-pushy way.

Once inside you will see that Il Ruttino is a very unpretentious restaurant. Locals claims it has the best pizza in Sorrento and maybe it does judging by how busy this place gets. The emphasis is on authentic Neapolitan street food.

We’ve eaten here ourselves on more than one occasion and the pizza is great and they’re also not shy with the portions either!

It’s a lively and friendly atmosphere with pizza prices between € 10 – € 20.

After your meal, when you exit the restaurant, turn right and walk 5 mins down the road until you come to the sea terrace. Here you can enjoy stunning views over the Gulf of Naples.

L’Antica Trattoria

Antica-Trattoria-restaurant-sorrento

L’Antica Trattoria is something of a Sorrento institution having been founded nearly 90 years ago.

The restaurant is located on one of Sorrento’s narrow streets within the old part of town.

The entrance to the restaurant is an oasis of vegetation, flowers and plants. The more picturesque dining area is under a vine covered pergola whilst the other dining area are more formal and perhaps a bit more contemporary.

Prices are a bit higher than the average. Although L’Antica Trattoria doesn’t have a Michelin star it did get a favourable mention in the food guide.

The food is excellent here and it is easy to see why this place has been going for as long as it has been.

You do get to experience, what feels like an authentic Italian dining experience. Expect traditional Italian dishes with a Sorrentine twist, for example, lemon pasta. They also have live musicians who entertain the guests to help put everyone in a good mood.

Frankie’s Pizza Bar

frankies-pizza-bar-sorrento

If you’re looking for the best pizza in Sorrento then one place is recommended above all others and that place is Frankie’s pizza bar.

They specialise in pizzas done the Neapolitan way by ensuring their pizza dough is highly aerated and then they allow it to ferment for a couple of days giving the yeast time to weave it’s magic.

They then stretch the dough using traditional methods before the pizza is placed into a red hot kiln-it’s only inside the oven for 90 seconds!

This creates a light and airy crust with the centre of the pizza moist and soft. Choosing a pizza with more sauce creates a soggier centre. This doesn’t detract from the flavour at all but for people unaccustomed to a traditional Neapolitan pizza then it may be something they’re not used to.

Frankies Pizza Bar also serve many other type of food e.g. panini, foccacia bread, pasta, anti-pasti etc and although reviews are generally good there are some who say the quality of other foods can be inconsistent along with the service.

We’d say that going to a pizza place and ordering something other than pizza is crazy-eat the food that the place specialises in and we’re sure you will not be disappointed!
